Fraser Island Holiday
April 12, 2009Ange & I woke before dawn to drive to Harvey Bay to start a 3 day tour of Fraser Island. I am not a tour person but the idea of just sitting back and letting others do the work was certainly enticing! We did a backpacker tour for 18-35s, with the hope of like minded travellers and introducing Ange to a more budget type of travel
.
The weather was overcast for most of the weekend with only a couple of short showers, but the Sun came out often (enough for a couple of people to get bad sunburns and me to have to apply sunscreen 4 times a day and still get a bit of colour! ) Sigh. The sand on the Island is so lovely and soft, however it means that sunscreen makes it stick to the skin. My skin has had a great exfoliation- rubbing sunscreen into sandy skin can do that! We had an enjoyable few days exploring the island with a group of Aussies, Kiwis, Swiss, German, American, Canadian, Norwegian and even a guy from Honduras!

The Cyclone from March had washed away a lot of the beach that acts like a highway on the Island and the rough seas of the last few days had washed more away which made the northern part of the Island inaccessible to tour buses. So we missed out on seeing Indian Head, the Maheno wreck, Champagne Pools & Eli Creek. This was disappointing, but what can you do? Well I decided to take up the option of a joy flight! It was the high-light of my trip. I so enjoyed the view from the air, the island is so big with so many interesting things to see. I seem to be less nervous about small planes then the last time I flew in one. I actually really enjoy being up in the air! I wish flying &/or hot air ballooning were not such expensive hobbies!

Fraser Island is a gorgeous place! I definitely want to go back- with some friends that know how to 4WD hopefully as next time I go I want to go camping on the Island and drive around- looks like great fun!
